We are super excited to collaborate with Irina Georgescu, author of cookbook 'Carpathia - Food from the heart of Romania' - who will introduce us to the delicious yet unknown Romanian food, traditions and history.

We are bringing her delicious food to your homes on Friday 6th November 2020

Romanian cuisine is a mosaic of culinary influences from Greek, Turkish, German, Slavic, French and Hungarian cultures, that come together in comforting, heart warming recipes. 

This is a food culture that is shaped by the rich history and landscape of the country and by the Carpathian mountains. The Carpathian mountains have shaped both the history and the regional aspect of their cuisine. They formed a natural border between the Ottoman Empire in the south (and east), and the Habsburg, Austro- Hungarian empire in the north and west. On top of these they have the Slavic influences. However, Romania is a Latin country and speaks a Latin language, being very close to Italian. They are a country surrounded by Slavic cultures and by the Finno-Ugric language of Hungary, but they have kept their Latinity intact for centuries. This is something that amazes people who visit the country. No matter where these influences come from, they all come together in a great meal! 

We have created an amazing menu for you and as these Romanian dishes are perhaps as new to you as it is to us, we’ve asked Irina, to tell us a bit about each course.

How does it work?

Choose from the the meat or vegetarian option menu. We prepare the food and send it by courier for next day delivery. All in insulated boxes with chilled ice packs.. We give you simple instructions for reheating and eating at a time of your choosing, either Friday night or Saturday.

THE  MEAL 

STARTER

Alivenci - Moldovan polenta cakes with cheese and dill served with Zacusca and mujdei (V)
Ingredients: Milk, butter, polenta, eggs, ricotta, feta, yogurt, flour, dill, baking powder. Allergens: milk, eggs, gluten

Zacuscă -a delicious autumnal dip of chargrilled aubergines and peppers mixed with saute onion, carrot, celeriac and tomato. 
Ingredients: Aubergines, peppers, onions, celeriac, carrots, tomato paste, olive oil, passata, paprika, bay leaf

Mujdei with yogurt- Romanian garlic vinagreitte mixed with yogurt
Ingredients: Yogurt, garlic, olive oil, vinegar, water and salt. Allergens: milk and sulphites

These polenta cakes are one of Romania’s iconic regional dishes. They come from Moldova, in the eastern part of the country, where we feel a lot of affection for them, both as an every day staple and something special. We bake them for religious celebrations, village fêtes, to welcome guests, to celebrate birthdays or to simply share comforting food with the ones we love. 

MAIN COURSE

MEAT

Rasol de vacă - Ossobucco with vegetables, dill oil and horseradish sauce
Served with steamed potatoes

A knock-out dish that is homely, satisfying and flavoursome!
A traditional Romanian dish where the meat is simmer slowly until tender and melts in the mouth

Ingredients for ossobucco: Ossobucco, onion, celery, bay leaves, carrots, juniper berries, french beans, olive oil. Allergens: celery
Dill oil: Dill, oil, lemon
Horseradish sauce: Horseradish, yogurt, garlic, pepper. Allergens: milk
Steamed potatoes: New potatoes, oil

VEGETARIAN MAIN COURSE

Sărmăluţe în foi de viţă - Vine leaves stuffed with sticky rice and sultanas in a tomato gratin

A delicious and gratifying dish, and its sweet-and-sour double act will almost certainly make you fall in love with it.

Ingredients: Onions, vine leaves, arborio rice, white wine, veg stock, sultanas, lemon, fennel, passata, cider vinegar, fresh tomatoes

DESSERT

Papanași - Ricotta doughnuts served with black cherry jam and crème fraîche

The ultimate comfort dessert – exuberant and rustic, papanai are the great big ending to any Romanian meal. We say that they are a bit like life: sweet, sour, round and imperfect. The doughnuts are not too sweet, since most of the sweetness comes from the jam.

Ingredients: Ricotta, yogurt, egg, sugar, vanilla, salt, plain flour, baking powder, orange, creme fraiche, cherry jam 
Allergens: Milk, eggs, gluten
